Honey bees have been kept in New Zealand for over 150 years. In that time, beekeeping has moved from being a home craft to a progressive industry. New Zealand is now recognised as one of the world's most advanced beekeeping countries, and is a leader in many areas.
In 1988, the Wood family relocated from Christchurch to Tarras (in Central Otago) to assist a friend with his beekeeping business, Lindis Honey. After operating solo for 30 years, Ross was increasing hive numbers. Colin Wood and Ross worked together for six years. When Ross retired, Colin bought the business and the whole family became involved. The hive numbers were then 1200.
Since then, the business has expanded to 3000 hives and has become a family enterprise. Colin oversees all operations. Tim's focus is on queen raising and establishing nucleus hives while Peter looks after the field work. Jan manages the front office, and Zoe is responsible for marketing. Most of our honey is sold to exporters, or is sent directly to buyers overseas. Our packaged brand - Lindis Gold - is now selling at Farmers' Markets to satisfy local demand.
